What is Base64 to Text?

Base64 hides in places you never notice: inside email attachments, data URIs, API tokens, and JSON payloads. The Base64 to Text decoder takes an encoded string like "SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ=" and restores the original readable content — "Hello World". Base64 exists because many transport systems handle plain ASCII reliably, so binary data and special characters get repackaged into a 64-character alphabet before sending.

Decoding matters whenever you need to see what is actually inside one of those opaque strings. A developer tracing a strange API response, a support engineer examining a data URI embedded in a page, or anyone handed a token and asked what it contains — all of them need the reverse trip from encoded characters back to meaning.

How to use

  1. Paste the Base64 string into the input field. Whitespace and line breaks inside the string are ignored, so multi-line encoded blocks can be pasted exactly as copied.
  2. Standard Base64 uses A–Z, a–z, 0–9, plus + and / with = padding. URL-safe variants that use - and _ instead are normalized automatically before decoding.
  3. Click decode. The tool validates the input first and points out where the problem lies if the string is malformed, rather than failing silently.
  4. Read or copy the decoded text. If the result looks like random symbols, the original was likely binary data (an image, for example) rather than text — the decoding itself still worked correctly.

Common use cases

  • API debugging: Many APIs return Base64-encoded fields. Decode them to confirm the payload holds what you expect before assuming your own code is at fault.
  • Inspecting data URIs: Web pages embed images and fonts as data: URIs. Decode the payload section to identify the real content or verify the MIME type.
  • Email forensics: MIME message bodies and attachments travel Base64-encoded. Decoding exposes the raw message text or file bytes underneath.
  • Token inspection: JWT payload segments and similar tokens are Base64-encoded JSON. Decode the middle segment to read the claims without installing a library.

Example

Input:  V2VsY29tZSB0byB0aGUgZGVjb2Rlcg==
Output: Welcome to the decoder

FAQs

What if my string has missing padding?

Base64 strings should end with = padding to make their length a multiple of four, but many systems strip it. The decoder accepts unpadded input and restores the missing padding itself, so "SGVsbG8" decodes just like "SGVsbG8=".

Does it decode to UTF-8 text?

Yes. Decoded bytes are interpreted as UTF-8, which covers plain English as well as accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and emoji — provided the original text was UTF-8 when it was encoded, which is the standard practice.

Can it decode an encoded image or file?

It will decode the bytes, but the output panel shows text, so binary content appears as unreadable symbols. For files, that is expected behavior — the point is usually to verify the bytes or re-save them elsewhere, not to view the image inline.

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No, and this is worth understanding: Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it instantly, exactly as this tool does. Never treat Base64 output as protected or secret — it only changes how data looks, never who can read it.
