Extracted Numeric Data

Separate the figures from the words

Reports, invoices, chat exports and scraped web pages mix numbers into sentences. When you only need the figures, for a quick sum, a check or a spreadsheet column, copying them one at a time is a waste of effort. This tool scans your text and lists every standalone number it finds, in the order they appear. It runs in the browser and returns results instantly.

Extracting the numbers

  1. Paste your text into the box. Use Paste for the clipboard, Sample for an example about prices, units and user totals, or Clear to start over.
  2. Press the extract button.
  3. The Extracted Numeric Data panel lists each number. Numbers Found shows the total, and a copy icon beside each row copies that one value.
  4. Press Download CSV to save every value. Note that the file arrives as extracted_data.txt with one number per line, which you can open in a spreadsheet or rename to .csv.

What counts as a number

The tool matches whole numbers such as 5 or 987654321 and decimals with digits on both sides of the point, such as 49.99 or 15.5. Currency symbols, percent signs and units are not part of the match, so $49.99 gives 49.99 and 15.5% gives 15.5. Unlike the other extraction tools here, duplicates are kept, so a value that appears three times is listed three times, which is useful for tallying.

Where this is handy

  • Pulling prices from a pasted product description to add them up.
  • Collecting order numbers and quantities from an email thread.
  • Extracting measurements or statistics from an article for a table.
  • Spotting ID-like strings of digits inside a log file.

Cases that surprise people

Only positive numbers are recognized: a leading minus sign is ignored, so -12 is listed as 12. Numbers with thousands separators are split, meaning 1,200 becomes 1 and 200, and a European style 1.200,50 turns into 1.200 and 50. Digits attached to letters, as in ABC123 or 2nd, are not matched because there is no word boundary between them. Dates and phone numbers will also produce several numbers each. Check the output against your source when precision matters, especially for financial totals.

For a quick total, copy the values into a spreadsheet column and use its sum function, after removing any entries you know are IDs rather than amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are negative numbers recognized?
Not as negatives. The pattern looks for digits only, so the minus sign is ignored and -12 is listed as 12. If sign matters, check the original text or add the sign back when you use the values.
Why was 1,200 split into 1 and 200?
The tool does not understand thousands separators. It reads the comma as a break and finds two separate numbers. Remove the separators from your text first if you want 1200 as a single value.
Does it remove duplicate numbers?
No. Numbers are listed every time they occur, in the order they appear, which lets you count how often a value is repeated. This is different from the email, URL and hashtag extractors, which collapse repeats. Clean the source text first if this matters to you.
What happens to currency symbols and percent signs?
They are left out. The numeric part is captured alone, so $49.99 becomes 49.99 and 15.5% becomes 15.5. You will need to note the unit or currency from your source text separately. The counter still reflects only the numbers themselves.
Is the downloaded file really a CSV?
The button is labeled Download CSV, but it saves extracted_data.txt with one number per line. That works fine when opened in a spreadsheet, and you can rename the extension to .csv if a program insists on it.
