Group Lines
Organize lines into custom-sized blocks
Chunk a long list into equal-sized blocks
A single tall column of items is difficult to scan and awkward to process in batches. Group Lines takes your list and breaks it into blocks with a set number of lines each, then places a separator between the blocks. That is useful whenever something has to be handled in fixed-size batches, or when a list simply reads better in small clusters.
How to group your lines
- Add your list to Input Lines, one item per line. Sample loads eight fruit names, and Paste and Clear work as expected.
- Set Group Size. The default is 3 and the minimum is 1.
- Optionally type text into the Separator field. Leaving it empty places one blank line between groups.
- Press Group Lines.
- The summary reports how many groups were created. Then copy the text or download grouped-lines.txt using Copy or .TXT.
How the groups are built
- Empty lines in your input are discarded first, so the count is based only on lines that contain something.
- Lines are taken in order, size at a time. With eight items and a size of three you get groups of three, three and two; the last group holds whatever is left.
- With an empty Separator, groups are divided by a blank line. With text in the Separator, that text is placed on its own line between the groups, for example a row of dashes.
When it is handy
- Splitting a list of email addresses into batches of 50 to respect a sending limit.
- Preparing flashcards, quiz questions or seating lists in sets of four or five.
- Breaking a long song, poem or script excerpt into stanzas of equal length.
- Making a list of IDs or URLs easier to paste into a tool that accepts limited batches.
Things to note
Grouping is purely by count, so the tool has no understanding of the content and it will not keep related items together. Because blank lines are removed before grouping, any grouping you already had in the input is lost and rebuilt from scratch. A group size below 1 or an invalid number falls back to 1. The input box is left as it was, so you can change the size or the separator and run it again. If you want a numbered heading above each group you will need to add it afterwards. The work happens with JavaScript in your browser page.
