JSON Beautifier
Make your ugly JSON data readable and perfectly aligned
Turn one-line JSON into something you can read
API responses, log lines and config exports often arrive as a single dense string of braces and quotes. Finding a value in that mess means squinting or scrolling sideways. The beautifier parses your JSON, then writes it back out with each key on its own line and nested objects stepped in, and colours the pieces so keys, strings, numbers, booleans and null values stand apart.
Beautifying step by step
- Paste the text into the Raw JSON Content box. The Paste button pulls from the clipboard, and Load Sample JSON fills in a small server-status example.
- Look at the Bytes figure in the header, which shows the size of what you entered.
- Open the Spacing menu and choose 2 Spaces, 4 Spaces (the default) or Tabs.
- Press Beautify JSON Data.
- Take the output from the Beautified Result panel using Copy JSON, or press Download .json to save a file named beautified-json.json.
Behaviour worth knowing
- The tool uses the browser's own JSON parser, so input must be strictly valid. Trailing commas, single-quoted strings, comments and unquoted keys are rejected, and you get a pop-up with the parser's message.
- Whitespace in the original is ignored; only the data matters, so the output is normalised regardless of how the input was laid out.
- Large integers beyond what JavaScript can hold exactly, such as long numeric IDs, may be rounded after parsing. Store those as strings if exact digits matter.
- Colour highlighting is display only; copied and downloaded text is plain JSON.
Everyday uses
- Reading a webhook payload or an API reply copied from a network inspector.
- Making a minified package or settings file readable before editing it by hand.
- Preparing a tidy example for documentation or a bug report.
- Comparing two responses by eye once both have the same indentation.
Practical tips
If the parser complains, look at the position it mentions: the usual causes are a missing comma between items, a stray trailing comma, or quotes that were converted to curly quotes by a word processor. Choose Tabs if your editor or team convention uses them, and 2 spaces if the nesting is deep and you want narrower lines. Processing takes place in JavaScript in your browser, so very large documents may pause the page briefly. If you want the reverse, a compact single-line version, use a JSON minifier. To only check correctness without reformatting, a JSON validator gives a clearer verdict.
