SHA256 Hash Generator
Secure Hash Algorithm 256 (256-bit)
What is SHA256 Hash Generator?
Our SHA256 Hash Generator computes the SHA-256 digest of any text you provide — a 256-bit hash shown as a 64-character hexadecimal string. SHA-256 is the current workhorse of cryptographic hashing: unlike MD5 and SHA-1, it has no practical collision or preimage attacks, which is why it underpins Bitcoin's proof-of-work, Git's newer object format, and TLS certificate fingerprints.
Developers use it both for integrity verification (confirming a file matches a published checksum) and as a building block inside HMACs and content-addressed storage.
How to use
- Enter the text you want to hash into the input box — an API key draft, a JSON webhook payload, or any string.
- The SHA-256 digest is calculated instantly as you type; there is no submit button and no delay.
- Read the 64-character lowercase hexadecimal result, which is always exactly 64 characters regardless of input length.
- Press copy to transfer the digest, then compare it against a checksum published by a software vendor or paste it into your code.
Common use cases
- Download integrity checks: Linux distributions publish SHA-256 checksums of their ISO images; hashing your downloaded ISO here and comparing the 64 characters confirms the file is byte-identical to the official release.
- Blockchain and crypto work: a student learning how Bitcoin works can hash block headers here to see the 64-hex output format that miners compete to find below a target.
- API signature testing: a backend developer debugging an HMAC-signed webhook can first verify the underlying SHA-256 digest of the payload body matches their server's computation.
- Content addressing: developers working with IPFS or Git-style object stores, where objects are referenced by their digest, use a generator to sanity-check what digest a given piece of content should produce.
FAQs
Is SHA-256 secure? Should I use it for passwords?
SHA-256 itself is sound, but it is the wrong primitive for storing passwords on its own — it is designed to be fast, so attackers can brute-force billions of guesses per second with GPUs. Use a slow, salted algorithm like bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2 instead.
How long is a SHA-256 hash?
Always 64 hexadecimal characters encoding 256 bits. Whether you hash a single letter or a whole book, the output length is identical — that fixed length is what makes hashes useful as fingerprints.
What's the difference between SHA-256 and SHA-1 or MD5?
Digest size and security. MD5 gives 32 hex characters (128-bit) and SHA-1 gives 40 (160-bit); both are broken for security purposes. SHA-256 gives 64 hex characters (256-bit) and remains unbroken, which is why vendors, Linux distros, and blockchain protocols standardize on it.
Does the tool store or transmit what I hash?
No. The hashing runs entirely in your browser with no server involved — nothing to sign up for, install, or configure. Input text never leaves your device.
