Add Line Breaks
Break long text into readable lines at a custom character width
Turn one long line into readable, fixed-width lines
Some text arrives as a single unbroken stream: an exported description, a copied paragraph from a database field, or a log message that runs far past the edge of your editor. Add Line Breaks inserts new lines so that no line is longer than the width you set. It is a hard-wrap tool, useful whenever the destination expects short lines rather than text that reflows on its own.
How to wrap your text
- Paste your text into the Input Text box, or use the Paste button, or load a plain .txt file with File.
- In the Break at field, enter the maximum number of characters per line. The field starts at 80 and accepts values from 10 to 500.
- Leave Break at word boundary ticked if you want lines to end between words. Untick it to cut at the exact character count, even in the middle of a word.
- Click Add Line Breaks. The result appears below with a Before and After comparison of characters, words and lines, plus a note saying how many line breaks were added.
- Use Copy or .TXT to take the result away.
How the wrapping behaves
- Each existing line is handled separately, so paragraphs you already separated stay separated. Only lines longer than the width are split.
- In word-boundary mode the tool splits on spaces. A single word that is longer than the width is left whole on its own line rather than chopped.
- In exact mode every chunk is precisely the chosen length except the last one, which holds whatever remains.
Where it helps
- Preparing a plain-text email or commit message body that should stay under a 72 or 80 character limit.
- Formatting a license header or README paragraph for a terminal-friendly file.
- Breaking a long product description into lines for a printer, label template or fixed-width display.
- Making pasted log lines or captions easier to read before sharing them in a ticket.
Tips and limits
The width counts characters, not pixels, so the wrapped text lines up properly only in a monospaced font. Tabs are not treated as word separators, and a URL with no spaces cannot be wrapped in word-boundary mode without being left as one long line. Exact mode is better suited to code-like strings such as long hashes or encoded values, where splitting mid-token is acceptable. If the result has more breaks than you wanted, raise the width and run it again on your original text. The tool works in your browser page and only handles text, so formatting such as bold or links is not preserved.
