Write Discord messages with the right syntax

Discord formats text through Markdown-style symbols: asterisks for emphasis, double bars for spoilers, backticks for code. Remembering which symbol does what is easy to get wrong. This formatter puts a small toolbar above a dark message box, wraps your selection in the correct characters, and can also build several complete versions of your message to copy.

Formatting a message

  1. Type your message in Compose Message, or press Sample to see an example with a spoiler in it.
  2. Select a piece of text and click Bold, Italic, Underline, Strike, Spoiler or Code Block. The tool inserts the symbols around your selection. With nothing selected, it inserts an empty pair at the cursor, and the code block button adds placeholder text you can replace.
  3. Click Generate Discord Styles.
  4. Use Copy for Discord on the variation you like, or Download (.txt) to save all of them.

A character counter in the header tracks the length of your message as you type.

The five generated variations

  • Markdown Ready is your text exactly as composed.
  • Code Block (Auto) wraps the whole message in triple backticks with the fix highlight, which renders in a colored monospaced box.
  • Quote Style puts a greater-than sign in front of every line to make a block quote.
  • Header Style adds a hash and a space at the start, making a large heading.
  • Small Text Style adds a dash-hash prefix for Discord's small subtext.

Use cases

  • Posting server rules or announcements with clear structure.
  • Sharing code or logs in a monospaced block.
  • Hiding plot points behind spoiler bars.
  • Preparing a message in advance and keeping a text copy of each style.

Tips and caveats

  • The cards show your raw syntax, not a rendered preview. You will see the styling once the message is sent in Discord.
  • Header and small-text prefixes are applied only at the very start of the message, while Discord expects them at the start of each line. For a multi-line message, only the first line will become a header.
  • Discord's message length limit applies when you paste, and standard accounts have a limit of 2,000 characters.
  • The Code Block toolbar button uses the js label, so change it if your snippet is in another language.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make text bold or a spoiler?
Select the words in the message box and click Bold or Spoiler. The tool wraps them in double asterisks or double vertical bars. When you send the message, Discord renders the styling and hides spoilers behind a bar.
Does the tool show how the message will look?
The cards use a Discord-like dark style, but they display the raw Markdown symbols rather than rendering them. Final styling appears once you paste and send the message in Discord itself.
Why is only the first line a header?
The Header and Small Text variations add their prefix once, at the beginning of the whole message. Discord needs the prefix at the start of each line, so add it manually to other lines if you want them styled.
What is the Code Block variation?
It wraps your whole message in triple backticks and the fix label, which Discord displays in a monospaced box with colored text. Use the toolbar Code Block button to wrap only a selected part in a js code block.
Can I save all the variations?
Yes. Download (.txt) saves every generated variation, each with its name, into a file called discord-messages.txt. You can also copy any single one with its Copy for Discord button.
