List to Text
Strip list formatting, bullets, and numbering to restore your text to plain paragraphs
Turn a formatted list back into plain lines
Lists copied from documents, web pages or notes apps usually bring their markers along: bullet dots, dashes, ticks or running numbers. When you want just the items, for a spreadsheet column, a sentence or a database import, those prefixes get in the way. This tool removes them and leaves you with the text of each item.
Using it
- Paste your list into the Formatted List Input box. The placeholder shows the mix it understands: numbered lines and bullet lines together.
- Click Flatten List.
- Read the cleaned lines under Plain Text Result.
- Press Copy Result to place them on your clipboard.
If you edit the input after converting, the result panel hides itself, so you never copy something that no longer matches your source.
What gets removed
For each line the tool first strips leading whitespace and any run of these markers: the bullet dot, hyphen, asterisk and checkmark. It then removes a leading number followed by a period, closing parenthesis or hyphen, such as 3., 4) or 5-. Finally it trims the line and discards lines that ended up empty. Because both steps run on each line, a combination like a dash followed by a numbered item is cleaned in one go.
Practical uses
- Pulling ingredient or task names out of a bulleted list before pasting them into a spreadsheet.
- Cleaning meeting notes so each action item can be reused as a plain sentence.
- Preparing product names or keywords that were pasted with checkmarks for a bulk import.
- Removing Markdown-style list dashes and asterisks from copied README text.
Details and edge cases
- The output keeps one item per line. It does not join the items into a single paragraph, whatever the heading of the tool might suggest, so use an unwrap tool afterward if you want one block of text.
- Only the start of a line is examined. Markers in the middle of a line stay put.
- Number-like text at the beginning of a genuine item can be caught by mistake. A line such as 1-2 weeks becomes 2 weeks, and 3.5 mm becomes 5 mm.
- A line starting with several asterisks, for instance Markdown bold, loses those asterisks as well.
- Nested list indentation is removed, so sub-items and main items come out at the same level.
- There is no download button; copy the result instead.
The work is done by JavaScript inside the page, so it responds instantly even with long lists.
