Raw Markdown

Check how your Markdown will look before you publish it

A README, documentation page or blog post can look different from what you imagined once the parser gets to it: a table refuses to draw, a list runs into a paragraph, a code fence swallows the rest of the file. The Markdown Previewer renders your text so you can catch these problems while it is still cheap to fix.

Previewing your text

  1. Paste or type into the Raw Markdown box. Click Sample to load a demonstration with headings, a list, a Python code block, a quote and a table, or Clear to start over.
  2. Click Preview Markdown.
  3. Read the Rendered Preview panel that appears under the button.
  4. Choose Copy HTML to copy the rendered markup, or Print to open a print-ready view.

The preview does not update while you type. It renders when you press the button, and editing the text hides the old preview so you do not mistake it for the current version.

Features worth using

  • Copy HTML puts the generated markup on your clipboard, useful when a CMS accepts HTML but not Markdown.
  • Print opens a new window with simple styling for headings, code blocks and tables and starts your browser's print dialog, from where you can choose Save as PDF.
  • The renderer is the marked library, so tables, fenced code blocks, task-style lists and blockquotes follow common GitHub-flavoured conventions.

Where it earns its place

  • Proofreading a README before committing it.
  • Checking that a table's pipes and separator row are formed correctly.
  • Producing a quick PDF of meeting notes written in Markdown.
  • Comparing how a snippet renders against what a colleague expects.

Caveats

The rendering here is not guaranteed to match another platform exactly, because GitHub, GitLab and static site generators each add their own extensions and styling. Code is displayed in a plain block without syntax colouring. The Print window pulls a web font from a public font service, so the font may fall back to a default one when you are offline or blocked, and it may be stopped by a pop-up blocker. The marked script is also loaded from a public CDN, so an offline browser cannot render the preview. Raw HTML inside your Markdown is passed through as written, so do not paste content from sources you do not trust. Rendering takes place in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the preview update as I type?
No. It renders when you click Preview Markdown. Typing in the box hides the previous preview so you never look at an outdated render, and you press the button again to refresh it.
How do I turn the preview into a PDF?
Click Print. A new window opens with the rendered content and your browser's print dialog appears. Choose Save as PDF as the destination if you want a file. Allow pop-ups if nothing opens.
Will it look identical to GitHub?
Not exactly. The tool uses the marked library and its own styling, so basic elements match GitHub's behaviour, but platform-specific extras and CSS differ. Treat it as a close check, not an exact copy.
What does Copy HTML give me?
It copies the HTML markup of the rendered preview, such as heading, paragraph and table tags. It does not include the page styling, so you will need your own CSS for the pasted result.
Why is nothing shown when I click Preview?
Either the input is empty, or the rendering script from the CDN could not load, for example because you are offline or an extension is blocking it. Add some text, check your connection and try again.
