Read the contents of a QR code from a picture

Sometimes you have a QR code as an image rather than something you can point a phone at: a screenshot, a photo from a chat, a PDF snapshot or a saved file. This scanner reads that image and shows you exactly what the code contains, whether that is a web address, a block of text or another kind of data. It is also a good way to look at a link before you decide to open it.

Scanning steps

  1. Click the upload area labelled Click or Drag QR Image Here and choose an image from your device. PNG, JPG and WEBP are the formats listed.
  2. A preview appears with the file name so you can confirm you picked the right picture.
  3. Press Scan Uploaded Image.
  4. The Decoded Information box shows the content. Data Type tells you whether it looks like a URL or Link, or Plain Text, and Scan Status reports success.
  5. Use Copy Content to copy the result, or Clear Scanner to remove the image and try another one.

How it works

The image is loaded into a hidden canvas in your browser and passed to the open-source jsQR library, which looks for the three square finder patterns and decodes the modules between them. The file selection and decoding happen in the page itself. The library is fetched from a public CDN when the page loads, so you need an internet connection for the scanner to work.

Everyday uses

Tips for a successful scan

The code should fill a good part of the picture, be in focus and have a clear light margin around it. Crop away busy backgrounds if a scan fails, and avoid heavy glare or extreme angles. If nothing is found, the page shows an alert asking for a clearer picture. The tool reads a single code per image and works from uploaded files only, so it does not use your camera. The data type label is basic: anything beginning with http is called a link, everything else is shown as plain text, even if it is really a vCard or Wi-Fi string. Be careful with links from unknown sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which image formats can I upload?
The upload area lists PNG, JPG, and WEBP, and the file picker accepts image files generally. Whatever the format, the picture needs to be sharp with the QR code clearly visible and a clear border around it.
Why does it say no QR code was found?
The code may be too small, blurry, cropped, low in contrast, or partly hidden. Try a higher-resolution image, crop it closer to the code, and remove glare or background clutter. Damaged codes beyond error correction cannot be read.
Can I scan with my camera instead of uploading a file?
No. This tool decodes uploaded image files only and has no live camera mode. To scan a code on paper, take a photo first and then upload that image, or use your phone's built-in camera app.
What does the Data Type label tell me?
It is a simple check: content starting with http is labelled URL or Link, and everything else is labelled Plain Text. Contact cards, Wi-Fi strings and other formats will still appear as text in the result box.
Is it safe to open a link I scanned?
Scanning only shows you the text, which lets you inspect the address before visiting it. Still, treat links from unknown sources with caution, check the domain carefully, and avoid entering passwords or payment details on unfamiliar sites.
