Present a query so other people can read it

A query that works is one thing; a query you can put in a document, a support ticket or a slide is another. SQL Pretty Print reflows a statement into a tidy, multi-line block so that anyone reading it can trace the columns, joins and conditions without squinting. It suits situations where the audience is a person, not a database.

Using the pretty printer

  1. Paste the statement into the SQL Query box. The Sample button loads a query joining employees, departments and salaries if you want to see the effect first.
  2. Select the Dialect closest to your system from Standard SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, T-SQL (SQL Server) or PL/SQL (Oracle).
  3. Press Beautify & Format SQL.
  4. Use Copy to paste into your document or Download to get formatted.sql.

Extra information shown

Below the output, badges give the character count before and after and the number of lines in the result, which is handy when a document has a line limit for code samples. The Structure Analysis card lists a simple validity note, the table named after the first FROM and the number of JOIN keywords, so you can mention query complexity in a review.

Typical scenarios

  • Attaching a readable query to a bug ticket so the developer does not need to reformat it first.
  • Putting example queries into onboarding documentation or a tutorial.
  • Preparing a slide for a data team meeting where a one-line query would be unreadable.
  • Answering a question on a forum with a properly laid-out snippet.

What to expect from the output

The pretty printing comes from the sql-formatter library, which the page loads from a public CDN. If it cannot load, a basic fallback simply starts a new line at main keywords. The layout, including its two-space indentation, is chosen by the library, and words keep the capitalization you gave them, so uppercase your keywords yourself if your style guide asks for it. The Indentation and Uppercase Keywords settings visible on the page do not currently alter the result. Copying puts plain text on your clipboard, so paste it into a code block to keep the alignment in fixed-width font. If a statement uses unusual vendor syntax, switch dialects and try again. Nothing in this step executes your SQL; it runs in your browser and only rearranges text.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is pretty printing different from minifying?
They do opposite things. Pretty printing adds line breaks and indentation so people can read a query, while minifying removes comments and collapses whitespace into one line. Use pretty print for documents, and a minifier for compact storage.
Will pretty printing change the meaning of my SQL?
It only rearranges whitespace and line breaks, so the meaning should stay the same. If you see something odd, such as a broken layout, try another dialect and compare the result with your original before using it.
Why is my SQL still lowercase after formatting?
Keywords keep the capitalization you entered. The Uppercase Keywords checkbox on the page does not currently change the output. Type keywords in capitals in your source query if your style guide requires that.
What do the line and character badges show?
They report how long your original text was, how long the formatted version is, and how many lines the formatted output contains. Line breaks and indentation make the formatted count higher than the original.
Can I keep the formatting when pasting into a document?
Use Copy, then paste into a code block or a fixed-width font. The indentation is made of spaces, so it survives most editors, but proportional fonts may make the columns look uneven.
