See exactly what changed between two versions
Comparing two drafts of a contract, two config files or two copies of an article by eye is tiring and error-prone. Text Compare Pro places the original and the modified text next to each other, marks each line as added, removed, changed or unchanged, and highlights the specific words that differ inside changed lines.
Running a comparison
- Paste the earlier version into Original Document and the newer one into Modified Document. Each box has Paste and Clear buttons and a live count of characters, words, lines and paragraphs.
- Choose Ignore Case and Ignore Whitespace. Both are on by default; the whitespace option trims spaces at the start and end of each line before comparing.
- Press Run Advanced Comparison. If you only want to see how it works, Load Sample Data fills both boxes first.
- Switch between Side-by-Side and Inline View above the results.
Reading the results
Green rows with a plus were added, red rows with a minus were removed, and amber rows are changed lines where individual words are marked in green and red. In side-by-side mode the two panes scroll together and show line numbers. Below sits Difference Analytics: a colored bar, counts of added, removed and changed lines, a match percentage, and a table comparing characters, words, lines and paragraphs of each document.
Everyday uses
- Checking what an editor or colleague altered in a document.
- Spotting differences between two versions of a configuration, script or query.
- Confirming that a copied or translated passage still matches the source.
- Verifying that two lists or exports contain the same lines.
How to interpret it correctly
- The comparison works line by line, and the match percentage is the share of rows that were identical. It is a quick indicator, not a similarity score for meaning.
- A line that exists somewhere else in the other text but not in the same position is shown as changed, not moved, because the tool does not detect reordered blocks.
- Word highlighting within a changed line compares words position by position. Inserting one word early in a sentence can therefore mark the rest of that sentence as different.
- Line breaks matter. If one version wraps text at different points, most lines will differ, so unwrap both first.
- Content containing HTML tags or angle brackets may display oddly in the result panes.
The comparison is calculated by JavaScript in the browser tab you have open.
