Text Normalizer
Standardize spacing, line breaks, and formatting for consistent content
Normalized Result
Make inconsistent text behave the same everywhere
Text pasted from Word, PDFs, emails and websites looks fine on screen but hides small inconsistencies: doubled spaces, Windows-style line endings, curly quotation marks, and several different kinds of dash. Those differences break searches, diffs, imports and string comparisons. Text Normalizer applies a short list of standardizing fixes so that the same character always appears the same way.
Steps to normalize a passage
- Paste your content into the Input Text box. A running character and word count shows under it.
- Under Normalization Settings, choose your fixes: Fix Multiple Spaces and Normalize Line Breaks are on by default, while Smart Quotes to Straight and Normalize Hyphens are off until you tick them.
- Click Normalize & Clean.
- Review the Normalized Result, check the Final Words and Final Lines figures, then use Copy or Save (normalized.txt).
What each setting changes
- Fix Multiple Spaces replaces any run of ordinary space characters with a single space.
- Normalize Line Breaks converts Windows CRLF endings to plain line feeds and squeezes any stretch of consecutive blank lines down to a single blank line, so paragraph gaps stay but excess gaps go.
- Smart Quotes to Straight converts curly single and double quotes into straight apostrophes and double quotes.
- Normalize Hyphens converts figure dashes, en dashes, em dashes and horizontal bars into an ordinary hyphen-minus.
Where it earns its keep
- Preparing text for a code editor, config file or JSON string where curly quotes cause syntax errors.
- Cleaning content before a diff so that only real differences appear.
- Tidying survey answers or product copy before importing them to a spreadsheet or database.
- Unifying punctuation in a manuscript that was assembled from several sources.
Good to know
The fixes are deliberately narrow. Only the regular space character is collapsed, so tabs and non-breaking spaces are left alone; if you need those removed, use a dedicated spacing tool first. Converting all dashes to hyphens changes typography, for instance a date range with an en dash will show a hyphen, so leave that option off for finished publishing copy. The result is trimmed at the start and end. The work is done with JavaScript in your browser page, and the original text in the input box is never modified.
