Make a URL-ready slug from any title
A slug is the readable last part of a web address, like /how-to-merge-pdf-files. Good slugs are lowercase, free of odd characters and separated by hyphens. Text to Slug takes a title, headline or product name and produces exactly that, so you do not have to strip punctuation and swap spaces by hand each time you publish something new.
Creating a slug
- Type or paste your page title into the Enter Your Page Title or Text box. A counter above it shows words and characters as you type. Paste and Clear buttons sit underneath for quick input.
- Click Generate SEO Slug.
- Read the Primary Slug Result. Press Copy to put it on your clipboard, or Export to download it as a small text file named seo-slug.txt.
- Use the Variation (Underscore) card if you need the same slug with underscores, and glance at the Live Preview to see it after https://yoursite.com/.
Exactly what happens to your text
The text is lowercased, every character that is not a letter, digit, underscore or space is deleted, and each run of spaces becomes one hyphen. So 10 Best SEO Tools: 2024 Edition! turns into 10-best-seo-tools-2024-edition.
Where it fits
- Setting a permalink for a blog post when your CMS insists on typing it manually.
- Naming routes or file names in a static site, where consistent lowercase hyphenated names avoid case-sensitivity problems on servers.
- Generating slugs for a list of product names before importing them to a store.
- Making anchor IDs for headings in documentation.
Watch out for these results
The rule is deliberately simple, and a few inputs behave in ways you may not expect. Hyphens you type are deleted rather than kept, so well-known becomes wellknown; write it with a space instead if you want two words. Accented and non-Latin letters are removed, not transliterated, so a title like Cafe Creme with accents loses those letters and non-English scripts may leave an empty result. The tool also does not drop filler words or shorten long titles, so trim the title first if you want a tidy address. The URL Friendly? badge is always displayed as VALID and is not a separate check, so review the slug yourself. Everything runs in your browser.
