Preview delimited text as a real table

Rows of values separated by commas, tabs, semicolons or pipes are compact but hard to check by eye. Is every row the same length? Which column holds which value? This tool turns your pasted text into a visual table, with the first row treated as the header, so you can see the structure before you use the data elsewhere.

How to convert

  1. Paste your data into Input Delimited Text. Example loads a small product table, Paste reads your clipboard and Clear empties the box.
  2. Choose a Delimiter: Auto-detect, Comma, Tab, Semicolon or Pipe.
  3. Click Convert to Table.
  4. Inspect the Visual Table Preview, along with the Rows Detected and Columns Detected counters.
  5. Use Download CSV if you want a file.

About delimiter detection

Auto-detect tries the four separators and picks the one that appears most often in the whole text. It works well for regular data, but a long text field with many commas inside a semicolon-separated file can fool it. If the preview looks wrong, pick the delimiter yourself. The column counter is based on the first row, and later rows with more or fewer values simply produce shorter or longer table rows.

Where it helps

  • Checking a copied spreadsheet range or a CSV snippet before importing it.
  • Turning a pipe-separated log extract into something readable for a report.
  • Verifying that a semicolon-delimited export, common in European settings, has the columns you expect.
  • Illustrating tabular data for a tutorial or a support ticket.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • Splitting is simple. Quoted CSV fields that contain the delimiter, such as a name with a comma inside quotes, are split anyway and will spill into extra columns.
  • The first line always becomes the header row, whether or not it is a real header.
  • Download CSV saves your input text exactly as typed, with its original delimiter, under the name table_data.csv. It does not convert semicolons or tabs to commas.
  • Cell values are trimmed but not otherwise checked, so numbers stay text.
  • There is no editing inside the preview; change the input and convert again.

Conversion, counting and the download are all handled by JavaScript in the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which delimiters are supported?
You can pick comma, tab, semicolon or pipe, or leave Auto-detect selected. Auto-detect counts how often each of those four characters appears in the text and uses the most frequent one.
Why are my columns wrong?
Most often the wrong delimiter was detected, or a quoted field contains the delimiter. Select the correct delimiter manually and convert again. Quoted values are not handled specially, so commas inside quotes still split the cell.
Is the first row treated as a header?
Yes. The first line is always shown as the header row in the preview, whatever its content. If your data has no header, the first data row will appear styled as one, but the values are unchanged.
What does Download CSV save?
It saves the exact text currently in the input box as table_data.csv. If you used tabs or semicolons, the file keeps them, so it is not re-written with commas. Edit the delimiter yourself if a program requires commas.
How are rows and columns counted?
Rows Detected is the number of lines in the input, including the header. Columns Detected is the number of cells found in the first line. Later lines with a different number of cells are still displayed.
