Strip the invisible padding from the edges of your text

Leading and trailing whitespace is the kind of clutter you cannot see but software can. A space after a username makes a login fail, a trailing tab throws off a spreadsheet lookup, and indentation copied from a PDF makes a list ragged. Trim Text Pro removes whitespace at the edges of your text, or of each individual line, and leaves everything in the middle of a line alone.

How to trim

  1. Paste your content into the Source Text box. A count of characters and words appears beneath it, and Clear resets the field.
  2. Under Processing Options, pick Trim Start & End, Trim Each Line, or keep both, which is how they start.
  3. Click Clean & Trim Text.
  4. The Processed Output section shows the text with three figures: Original Chars, Cleaned Chars and Spaces Removed.
  5. Take the result using Copy Result or Save TXT, which downloads trimmed_text.txt.

Choosing the right mode

Where it comes in handy

  • Cleaning form values or imported cells before comparing them.
  • Fixing a copied block of text that starts with several blank lines.
  • Removing the indentation from lines copied out of an email reply.
  • Checking whether hidden padding is inflating a character count.

What it leaves alone

Only the edges are trimmed. Double spaces between words, blank lines in the middle of the text and tabs inside a line are untouched, so pair it with a spacing or blank-line tool if you need those fixed too. Whitespace here means anything the browser regards as whitespace, which includes spaces, tabs, line endings and non-breaking spaces at the edges. Spaces Removed is the character difference between input and output, so it includes removed line ends at the edges. The trimming is done with JavaScript in your browser page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the two options?
Trim Each Line cleans the beginning and end of every line separately. Trim Start & End cleans only the very start and end of the whole text, including any blank lines there. Both are ticked at first, and you can use either alone.
Will it remove double spaces between words?
No. Only whitespace at the edges of the text or of each line is removed. Spaces between words stay as they are, so use a tool that removes extra spaces if you want internal gaps collapsed.
Does it delete blank lines in the middle of my text?
No. Blank lines between paragraphs are kept. Trim Each Line turns a whitespace-only line into an empty line, but it does not delete it. Trimming the start and end only removes blank lines at the very beginning or end.
Does it count non-breaking spaces as whitespace?
Yes, at the edges. The trimming follows the browser's definition of whitespace, which covers regular spaces, tabs, line endings and non-breaking spaces, so those are removed when they sit at the start or end.
What does Spaces Removed measure?
It is the difference in character count between your original text and the processed text. That includes any tabs and line breaks removed at the edges, so it may be higher than the number of visible spaces.
