Unwrap Text
Remove line breaks to create a single paragraph
Join hard-wrapped lines into one paragraph
Text copied from a PDF, an email or a terminal is often broken into short lines at a fixed width. Paste that into a web form or word processor and every line ends abruptly. This tool replaces the line breaks with single spaces so the content flows as one continuous block of text.
Unwrapping in four steps
- Paste the wrapped text into the Input Text box. Paste reads from your clipboard and Sample loads a five-line example.
- Leave Clean extra spaces ticked if you want repeated spaces and tabs squeezed into one and any leading or trailing whitespace removed. It is on by default.
- Press Unwrap Text.
- Take the result with Copy or download unwrapped-text.txt using the .TXT button.
The Before and After panels show characters, words and lines, and the summary reports how many lines were merged.
What exactly happens
Every line break, whether Windows or Unix style, becomes a single space. With Clean extra spaces on, all runs of whitespace are then collapsed, which also flattens blank lines between paragraphs. That last detail is the most important one: this tool produces one single paragraph. If your document has several paragraphs separated by empty lines, they will be merged too. Process each paragraph separately if you need to keep them apart.
Typical situations
- Fixing text copied from a PDF where each visual line became a paragraph.
- Cleaning up an email quoted at 72 columns before reposting it.
- Preparing a long description for a spreadsheet cell or database field that must be one line.
- Making subtitle or lyric text easier to paste into a translation tool that expects continuous prose.
Edge cases
- Words hyphenated at the end of a line, such as inter-national, keep their hyphen and simply gain a space after it. You will need to fix those manually.
- Lists and code are not suitable for this treatment, because their line structure is meaningful.
- If you switch Clean extra spaces off, a line that already ended with a space will produce a double space after joining.
- Nothing is added or removed apart from whitespace, so word counts stay identical.
The conversion is done by JavaScript in your browser tab. If you need the opposite, breaking long lines at a set width, use the companion Wrap Text tool.
