Reverse words, letters, or both

Word Flipper rearranges text in three different ways. It can reverse the order of the words on each line, reverse the spelling of each word while keeping the words where they are, or combine the two. People use it for puzzles and word games, for spotting how a sentence reads backwards, for creating mirrored text effects, and for quickly testing how software handles reversed strings.

Flipping text step by step

  1. Enter or paste your text into the Input Text box. Paste reads your clipboard, File loads a .txt document and Clear wipes the box.
  2. Choose a mode: Flip words per line (the default), Flip characters per word, or Both.
  3. Decide whether to keep Preserve punctuation ticked. It is on by default.
  4. Press Flip Words.
  5. The result appears next to your original in a short preview of the first 500 characters. Press Show Full Output to see everything, then use Copy or .TXT (flipped-text.txt).

What each mode produces

  • Flip words per line turns 'The quick brown fox' into 'fox brown quick The'. Each line is processed on its own, so lines stay in their original order and only the words within them move.
  • Flip characters per word turns 'Hello world' into 'olleH dlrow'. Word order is untouched.
  • Both applies the two steps together, which mirrors the whole line from end to start.

Ideas for using it

Details and limits

Blank lines are left as they are. Preserve punctuation looks for punctuation such as a period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, semicolon or colon at the end of the original line and makes sure the flipped line finishes with it. In the word-order mode this means a mark that was attached to the old last word can appear both there and at the end, so read the result and switch the option off if you would rather have a plain reversal. Characters are reversed unit by unit, which can scramble emojis and letters written with separate accent marks. Words are separated by ordinary spaces when reversing characters. Everything happens in your browser page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Both mode do?
It reverses the word order on each line and then reverses the letters inside every word. For text separated by single spaces the result is the whole line written backwards, so 'one two' becomes 'owt eno'.
Does it reverse the order of the lines too?
No. Each line is flipped independently and stays in its original position. Only the words or characters within a line change. If you also want the lines in reverse order, you would need to reorder them separately.
How does Preserve punctuation work?
If the original line ends with a period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, semicolon or colon, that mark is placed at the end of the flipped line. In word-order mode the mark can still stay on its word too, so it may show twice.
Will emojis and accented letters flip correctly?
Not always. Character reversal works on individual text units, so emojis and letters stored with separate combining accents can be split apart and look broken. Use plain text if you need a clean reversal.
Can I see the whole result?
Yes. The preview panel shows only the first 500 characters of the original and flipped text. Click Show Full Output to display all of it, and note that Copy and .TXT use the complete flipped text.
